Boakai Dismisses Ambassadors-at-Large and Envoys in Major Diplomatic Shakeup
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has ordered the immediate termination of all Ambassadors-at-Large, Special Envoys, and Trade and Investment Representatives, signaling a significant restructuring of Liberia’s diplomatic framework.
The decision was announced at a press briefing hosted by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT). Minister Piah emphasized that the President’s directive aims to realign these diplomatic roles to reflect better Liberia’s current governance needs and foreign policy objectives.
“Reappointments will be made based on the country’s governance needs in the current dispensation,” Piah explained. “These roles will come with clear and specific terms of reference and reporting lines within the framework of Liberia’s Foreign Policy Direction.”
The President’s action is part of a broader effort to enhance efficiency and accountability across Liberia’s diplomatic missions. According to the administration, the forthcoming reappointments will offer a more strategic and coordinated approach to handling international relations and trade and investment opportunities that align with the nation’s economic goals.
Minister Piah reassured that the dismissal process would be respectful, with formal notifications sent to those previously holding the positions. “We will ensure that the process is dignified, and all those who served will be properly thanked for their contributions to the country,” Piah noted.
The overhaul comes at a time when Liberia is reassessing its foreign policy with the goal of building stronger international partnerships to drive economic growth and elevate the country’s global standing. Though no timeline for the new appointments was provided, it is anticipated that the positions will be filled strategically in alignment with the government’s evolving foreign policy.
