United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Sierra Leone First Lady Mrs. Fatima Maada Bio to serve as a member of the United Nations Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste.
According to Mr. Guterres, the Board has an important role to play in supporting zero-waste initiatives in the context of sustainable development.
A zero-waste approach conserves natural resources, reduces pollution from extraction, manufacturing, and disposal, and protects the health of communities by reducing pollution in the air, water, and soil by keeping toxins and waste out of landfills and incinerators.
A Communication sent to Mrs. Bio dated 12th April 2023 indicated that Zero waste is gaining attention worldwide as a sustainable solution to reduce waste, redesign material use and production, promote a circular economy to strengthen multi-partner, and multi-disciplinary to raise awareness to promote local and National zero-waste initiatives.
“I look forward to the work you will undertake with fellow Board members to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and I have asked the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to work closely with you”.

She has been a long-standing human rights advocate and has embarked on many programs, all geared towards human capital development, with an emphasis on women’s empowerment and protecting our children.
