NEC Boss: There Will Be Biometric Voting, But Biometric Registration Will Go As Planned
The Chairperson of the National Election Commission (NEC) Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 during the 7th Day Sitting of the 6th Session of the Honorable House of Representatives of the 54th Legislature provided updates on the upcoming Biometric Voter Registration when she appeared in full Plenary.
Addressing members of the House in opened Plenary, the NEC Chairperson assured that the Commission is fully prepared to conduct the Biometric Voter Registration exercise as planned.
She further informed the August Body that there will be no biometric voting; instead, the manual voting system will be used.
Madam Lansanah appeared along with the Board of Commissioners of the NEC to discuss issues relating to the voter registration information containing the VR scheduled and factsheet the Commission had earlier submitted to that August body.
Her appearance was based on an invitation from the Honorable House of Representatives to provide detailed information on the 2023 electoral process.
Madam Lansanah said individuals whose nationality will be questioned during the registration exercise will be required to prove their citizenship by providing a citizen ID card, passport, and recognition by elders of the communities in which the registration process is taking place.
Responding to an inquiry from lawmakers on how to curtail multiple registrations, the NEC Boss asserted that anyone who attempts to do such will be weed out because of the fingerprint used during the process.
Madam Lansanah has assured that she would notify the Plenary of the House of Representatives on more updates within the period of three days.
After her appearance, a motion was proffered by Nimba County District #3 Representative Joseph N. Somwarbi to discharge the NEC Chairperson and Board of Commissioners.
