CDC Congratulates Trump, Suspends Lawmakers Amid Allegations Against Unity Party; Deputy Speaker Fallah Responds
Monrovia, Liberia – November 6, 2024 – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) extended its congratulations to U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump today, commending the American people for what it described as a democratic process that underscored respect for the will of the people. In a press release, the CDC acknowledged the significance of Trump’s win and emphasized the strength of American democracy.
However, the CDC’s press statement quickly shifted focus to domestic concerns, with sharp criticism directed at Liberian President Joseph Boakai and his Unity Party administration. The CDC accused Boakai of attempting to undermine democratic processes within Liberia by exerting pressure on the Legislature and Judiciary. The statement claimed that Boakai is attempting to turn Liberia into a one-party-dominant state and condemned his alleged interference in legislative affairs, specifically referencing efforts to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
The CDC also criticized the Boakai administration for a series of alleged governance failures, including delayed payments to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), off-budget spending, and allegations of corruption within various government institutions, such as the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC).
The CDC then temporarily suspended several of its lawmakers for their involvement in what it described as an “unlawful” attempt to undermine the legislative leadership. The party cited violations of the CDC’s constitution as grounds for suspending the legislators, pending an investigation by the party’s Grievance and Ethics Committee.
Deputy Speaker Fallah Responds to Suspension
Among those suspended is Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah, who responded publicly to the CDC’s decision. In a heartfelt message, Fallah expressed his continued dedication to the CDC and President George Weah, underscoring his longstanding loyalty to the party.
“To my beloved CDC family!” Fallah began, reflecting on his years of service and his sacrifices for the CDC. He referenced the recent campaign efforts in Lofa County, where he helped grow the CDC’s presence from 7% in 2017 to 37% in 2023, even amid threats and intimidation. “Though the ultimate outcome did not favor us, the campaign remains a proof of our commitment to the party,” Fallah stated, reaffirming his willingness to go the extra mile for the CDC.
Fallah emphasized that a commitment to transparency and accountability has always driven his actions in the Legislature. He clarified that his decisions on Capitol Hill were intended to protect Liberia’s interests and further the CDC’s ideals. “It is my hope that, in time, you will see these actions for what they were—an effort to protect and uplift Liberia and our dear CDC,” he added.
In light of his suspension, Fallah expressed his acceptance of the party’s internal processes, stating, “I welcome the party’s decision to suspend me pending investigation. I fully submit to our internal process led by the grievance and ethics committee, understanding the importance of addressing the concerns as raised.” He voiced hope that the CDC would emerge stronger and more unified after the inquiry.
Fallah closed his statement with an appeal to CDC members for continued unity and dedication to Liberia’s advancement, saying, “As we move forward, I hope that we can find it in our hearts to continue working together for the betterment of Liberia. Our journey is far from over, and there is still much we can achieve as a united force.”
