The former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has categorically denied claims made by elements from the ruling Unity Party regarding an alleged plot to remove Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.
Jefferson Tamba Koijee, Secretary General of the CDC, emphasized that Speaker Koffa enjoys unwavering confidence from the party’s Standard Bearer, ordinary partisans, and the entire executive committee. Koijee described Koffa as a unifying figure within the party.
Speaking to Freedom FM, Koijee said, “Speaker Koffa enjoys the unquestionable confidence of the Standard Bearer, the ordinary partisans and the entire executive committee. He’s a man that cuts across.”
Spoon Talk and several bloggers have been running articles about the removal of House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa by lawmakers of the CDC led by Deputy Speaker, Lofa County Representative Thomas Fallah. They claim that the Speaker poses a threat to the candidature of former President George Manneh Weah in 2029 for the presidency of Liberia.
CDC Representative of District # 9, Hon. Frank Saah Foko echoed a contrast to this sentiment in a Facebook post, asserting that Speaker Koffa has the full support of the great people of District 9 in Montserrado, as well as the CDC’s leadership and caucus in the House of Representatives.
“Let me state categorically that the Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa enjoys the confidence of the great people of Dist 9 Montserrado and the leadership and caucus of the CDC and the entire House of Representatives”; Foko emphasized.
However, Marcus Zorleh, in an interview with Kukatonon News, criticized Ambulai Mamay, a former regular caller on Spoon Talk. Zorleh dismissed Mamay’s claims that CDC lawmakers were plotting to remove Speaker Koffa. Zorleh further accused the Unity Party and its supporters of spreading falsehoods to gain and maintain power;
“One former regular caller, Ambulai Mamay sits with criminal Stanton Witherspoon sits of Spoon Talk and spew rubbish that CDC lawmakers are plotting to remove Speaker Koffa; if he had sense, then he would have said, that Speaker Koffa is already removed. Nothing added up in what he said. Again, we say the Unity Party people and their supporters lied their way to power. To sustain such lies is very hard”.
Meanwhile, Musa Hassan Bility, Nimba County District #7 Representative, hinted at behind-the-scenes discussions related to the situation.
Pundits have it that the plot to remove Speaker Koffa and elect Unity Party (UP) Representative Koon continues and this is part of the UP’s game plan after the April 21 weekend meeting in Tubmanburg, Bomi County between the UP-aligned Lawmakers and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Others are claiming that this is coming in the wake of a pending audit of the House of Representatives called by Speaker Koffa.
The controversy surrounding Speaker Koffa continues to unfold, with conflicting narratives from different political factions. As the situation develops, Liberians closely watch the unfolding drama in their political landscape.
