CDC Responds to Independence Day Speech, Emphasizes Strong US-Liberia Ties

Monrovia, Liberia – In response to the 177th Independence Day Oration by Dr. Robtel NeeJai Pailey, Liberia’s main opposition party, the Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC), has issued a press release condemning the speech, which they claim included unwarranted criticisms of the United States. The CDC emphasizes that these views do not reflect the sentiments of most Liberians, who value the enduring relationship between Liberia and the U.S.

The CDC acknowledges the importance of free speech but firmly rejects any rhetoric that appears to challenge the values and principles of the United States or Liberia’s international allies. They criticized the remarks as demonstrating a lack of understanding of the historical and ongoing support provided by the U.S. to Liberia.

Criticism of the Speech

Dr. Pailey’s speech, which was delivered during the national celebration of Liberia’s independence, has drawn criticism from the CDC for its perceived negative portrayal of the United States. The opposition party argues that the speech lacked empirical evidence and was driven by emotion rather than a solid academic or intellectual foundation.

The CDC also criticized officials from the Boakai-Koung Unity Party-led administration for supporting what they describe as “unfounded attacks” against the U.S. They urged that the focus should have been on pressing national issues, such as the government’s attacks on state institutions, violations of procurement laws, and recent incidents of violence in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, and Monrovia.

Emphasizing U.S. Contributions

The CDC highlighted the significant contributions made by the United States in Liberia’s post-war reconstruction and development efforts. They pointed to the historical support from the U.S., including the involvement of international forces like ECOMOG, ECOMIL, and UNMIL, and estimated the investment in Liberia’s recovery to be in the tens of billions of U.S. dollars.

The opposition party underscored that while the United States has played a crucial role in supporting Liberia, certain responsibilities, such as the construction of public parks and other civic amenities, fall squarely on Liberia’s national leadership. They argued that blaming the U.S. for these domestic issues is misplaced and reflects a lack of patriotic leadership.

Reaffirming U.S.-Liberia Relations

The CDC reaffirmed its appreciation for the United States and the broader international community, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to Liberia’s growth and development. The party emphasized the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties and constructive dialogue to further Liberia’s progress.

The antithesis underscores the CDC’s commitment to preserving Liberia’s longstanding relationship with the United States and highlights the need for national unity and a focus on addressing the country’s internal challenges.

Meanwhile, the United States Embassy addresses concerns about Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Catherine Rodriguez’s decision to leave the event due to divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations by the national orator. The U.S. emphasized its longstanding partnership with Liberia, providing over $163 million in annual foreign assistance and additional support through international organizations and private entities. While recognizing the orator’s right to free speech, the Embassy defended Rodriguez’s choice to leave as a personal expression of disagreement with the remarks. The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to a positive and collaborative relationship with Liberia, rooted in shared values and mutual respect, and expressed eagerness to continue working together for the benefit of both nations.
