LACC Launches Investigation into Alleged $15 Million Off-Budget Spending by Government
The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has initiated an investigation into claims of government off-budget spending, totaling an alleged $15 million. In an official statement released on Monday, LACC Executive Chairperson, Cllr. Alexandra Zoe, addressed the concerns raised by these allegations, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in handling public resources.
The allegations of off-budget expenditures have drawn public attention due to their potential to undermine trust in governance and fiscal discipline. Cllr. Zoe reassured the public that the LACC takes the claims seriously, as they strike at the core of the commission’s mission to promote good governance and financial integrity in Liberia.
“We take these allegations seriously, as they touch on matters that are core to our institutional objectives,” Cllr. Zoe stated. She acknowledged that if the claims are confirmed, off-budget spending could damage public confidence and compromise the country’s financial stability.
The LACC has already begun a preliminary review of the allegations, leading to a comprehensive investigation. This inquiry aims to uncover the accuracy of the claims, assign accountability where necessary, and follow legal procedures to address any potential misconduct. The LACC Executive Chairperson affirmed that the investigation will be conducted with “utmost transparency and independence.”
Cllr. Zoe explained that the investigation will involve collaboration with key institutions, including the Ministry of Finance and other oversight bodies, to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry. “We assure the public that we will leave no stone unturned in this investigation,” she said, adding that legal actions such as sanctions and prosecutions will be pursued if evidence of wrongdoing is found.
In her statement, Cllr. Zoe also called on the public and the media to exercise restraint and avoid unnecessary speculation during the investigation. She emphasized the importance of allowing the process to unfold based on verifiable facts and evidence.
The LACC reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to combating corruption in all forms, pledging to ensure that any instances of financial mismanagement are met with the full force of the law. “The LACC remains steadfast in its mission to combat corruption in all forms. Any allegations of financial mismanagement will be met with the full force of the law,” Cllr. Zoe reiterated.
The commission promised to provide further updates as the investigation progresses, encouraging patience and trust in the legal process.
