Weah Underscores Government’s Progress to UN’s SDG Agenda
Liberia’s President, George Weah, has underscored significant strives made by Liberia emphasizing his Government’s efforts towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda.
Speaking at the official United Nations Day 2023 Celebration in Liberia, President Weah told the UN body that Liberia’s participation in the integrated multidimensional stabilization mission in Mali coupled with the endorsement of the action for peacekeeping (A4P) initiative, clearly states that Liberia is on strive to continue on path to the UN targeted goals.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is a mission for 2030 launched a few years back aimed at, protecting global peace, and human rights and ending poverty in all its forms. The UN 2030 Agenda also envisages “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”.
The Liberian Leader on Tuesday, October 31st, in Monrovia, stressed that the Government’s Pro-Poor Agenda, is has buttressed efforts to maintenance of peace, protection of human rights, press freedom, and access to affordable health care among others which are paramount to the SDG Agenda of every member state.
“Liberia’s commitment to the 2030 agenda is reflected within the Pro-Poor agenda for prosperity and development, with major targets including jobs creation, infrastructure development, industrialization, access to affordable health care and education, and the sustenance of peace and security to keep the nation focused on its future development agenda. It is in this light that my government has been keen on role connectivity, free education, and healthcare delivery”.
“We serve in the United Nations Integrated Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in Mali. As a manifestation of our commitment to peace and security, Liberia endorsed the Secretary-General Action for Peacekeeping, A4P Initiative, which aims to strengthen peacekeeping through more targeted mandates, stronger and safer operations, better equipped and trained forces, and by mobilizing support for political solutions,” President Weah emphasized.
The President then emphasized this year’s theme: “Rebuilding Trust and Reuniting Solidarity, Accelerating Actions on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals in Liberia towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Sustainability for All” is a clarion call for Liberia to define its priority toward the 2030 agenda.
For her part, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Christine Umutoni, recognized Liberia’s commitment to the UN Agenda recounting the peaceful conduct of the just-ended election in Liberia.
Madam Unutoni stressed that the October 10 polls signify Liberia’s effort towards upholding peace and the rule of law she underscored the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN Resident Coordinator furthered that it is the responsibility of every UN member state to help build the wall of peace, sustainable development, and human rights, stating that they are paramount to the August Body 2030 agenda to help tackle key global concerns.
“Liberian’s peaceful participation in the just ended election was a demonstration of nationalism, patriotism which are all essential for the long-term development and stability of any nation”.
“The United Nations was privileged to have been a partner in these elections, working with the National Elections Commission. The United Nations to help in the same way during the next round.”
“The charter of the United Nations in to forth 78 years ago today, points that way. Above all, it is rooted in the spirit of determination to heal the vision repair relations and peace to expand its opportunities and leave no one behind.” She said.
The official UN 2023 Day Celebration in Liberia brought together, Foreign Diplomats, Ambassadors, and Government officials among other dignitaries.
Liberia is among other African Countries that are striving toward achieving the objectives of the UN 2030 agenda.
