ECOWAS and UN Condemn Foya Elections Violence And Call For Calm

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations (UN) have in the strongest terms condemned the Foya political violence between the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the opposition Unity Party (UP) leading to the loss of three lives.

A press statement issued on Saturday, September 30, 2023, said “in the spirit of the Farmington River Declaration 2023, the protection of human rights, and under the due process of the law”.

The ECOWAS and UN have also called on the political leaders of the CDC and UP to strongly urge their supporters to refrain from provocation and any other acts of violence, something which they further invited the UP and CDC to fully cooperate with the Liberia National Police (LNP) in the ongoing investigations.

The ECOWAS and UN commended the Liberia National Police (LNP) for promptly restoring calm in Foya; urging the LNP to conduct speedy and impartial investigations as to make public their findings and ensure that the perpetrators are prosecuted.

The regional bloc (ECOWAS) and United Nations cautioned the stakeholders and the general public to continue upholding the values of peace, accountability, respect for the rule of law in order to consolidate peace and security in the Country during this critical electoral period.

At the same time, the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and United Nations (UN) have called on the Liberian Media to be responsible in their reporting as a means to avoid inflaming the volatile situation.
