Tiawan Gongloe’s LPP Endorses Boakai In Run-off Presidential Elections
Ahead of the November 14, 2023, pending Presidential Run-off Election, the Liberian People’s Party (LPP) of Cllr. Taiwan Gongloe has announced its support for Unity Party’s Standard Bearer, Joseph Boakai, in a face-off election against Incumbent President, George Weah.
Recently, the National Election Commission (NEC) headed by Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah declared a run-off Presidential election between the Incumbent President George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), and the main Opposition Contender, Joseph Boakai, of the Unity Party, who emerged as the top two candidates in the just-ended October polls.
In a major news conference, the Liberian People’s Party (LPP) disclosed that its decision to support Boakai is predicated upon the party’s expectations that the Unity Party is most likely to implement a shared vision of the LPP’s ten-point agenda.
Addressing the news conference on Wednesday, October 25th, in Monrovia, the National Chair of the Liberian People’s Party, Nyanquoi Zizi, stressed the “strengthening of the rule of law, tackling corruption, conducting quarterly lifestyle audit for public officials, prosecuting corrupt officials, among others as points pinned on the agenda of the LPP, something he said the Party believes UP can deliver on.
“Fellow Liberians, partisans, supporters, and well-wishers of Liberia today we are faced with an extremely difficult choice between two parties that were fiercely criticized by our partisans and supporters at home and abroad.
From the broad consultation that we have conducted among our partisans and supporters at home and abroad as well as our conclusion that the party, CDC in power places Liberia literal intensive care unit. We hereby declare that we will support the only opposition UP that was chosen by the Liberian people to compete with the Ruling Party, CDC”, LPP’s Chairman Zizi enunciated.
According to the LPP National Chair, while the Liberian People’s Party is calling on all of its supporters to join hands and support the opposition UP, it remains vigilant in criticizing the party it pledged its support to if it fails to perform to expectations.
“We hereby place a notice to the party we are declaring support for upon its failure to meet these expectations, we will be the first to condemn and criticize them.
We call on all our partisans to go out to campaign and vote for the Unity Party to ensure that the Unity Party wins this second round of this 2023 Presidential Election,” he furthered.
He additionally furthered that the LPP believes opposition Leader, Boakai would strive to achieve key expectations under his administration reflecting the lives of the Liberian People, than he said opposed to the Incumbent President.
The Liberian People’s Party of renowned Liberian Lawyer, Cllr. Taiwan Gongloe was one of the many political parties that participated in the just-ended October 10th Presidential and General elections standing 6th with 26,394 votes constituting 1.44% among twenty contested political party presidential candidates.
Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission (NEC) pronouncement to a Run-off election between Incumbent President George Weah and Opposition Leader Boakai caught up in line with the Liberian Election Law that calls for Fifty Plus One percent (50+1%) votes for a presidential candidate to be declared as winner on the first ballot.
However, the two top Presidential Candidates, the Incumbent Weah of the CDC, and Boakai of the opposition UP accumulated 804,087 and 796,961 total valid votes constituting 43.83% and 43.44% respectively, which is below the constitutional benchmark, and are due to face off a second-round election.
